Atmospheric Tank (Atmospheric Pressure Tank)

Atmospheric tanks are one of the most commonly used types of tanks in foam fire suppression systems. These tanks operate using internal pressure and are in direct contact with the surrounding air. Unlike pressurized tanks, atmospheric tanks function without the need for an external pressurized air source and rely solely on the surrounding atmospheric pressure.

Principle of Operation:

  1. Use of External Pressure: Atmospheric tanks operate under external atmospheric pressure. In these tanks, the foam concentrate is stored freely, and in the event of a fire, it is released naturally due to the pressure difference.

  2. Liquid and Air Mixture: The tanks regulate the pressure between the liquid and the air, typically through an adjustment valve. The liquid pressure inside the tank is balanced with the external atmospheric pressure, ensuring proper foam concentrate release during operation.

  3. Slow Release: Atmospheric tanks allow for a slower and controlled release of foam concentrate. This ensures that sufficient foam is produced during the early stages of the fire, providing a gradual suppression effect.

Features of Atmospheric Tanks:

  • Larger Capacity: Atmospheric tanks typically have larger capacities, making them ideal for use in vast areas and large-scale fire suppression systems.

  • Direct Contact with Air: These tanks are exposed directly to the surrounding atmosphere and operate under atmospheric pressure.

  • Lower Pressure Requirements: Since atmospheric tanks don’t require a pressurized air system, they tend to be more economical compared to other types of tanks.

  • Easy Installation and Maintenance: Atmospheric tanks are usually designed with simplicity in mind, making them easier to install and maintain.

Applications:

Atmospheric tanks are preferred in large-scale fire suppression systems, especially in environments that require significant foam coverage. Common application areas include:

  • Industrial Plants and Factories
  • Storage Areas
  • Airports and Ports
  • Fire Training Facilities
  • Chemical and Power Plants
